BUY AND DRIVE AWAY WITH TOTAL PEACE OF MIND

A study conducted by the Zambia Institute of Policy Analysis and Research revealed that the used car market in Zambia is estimated at 50,000 registrations in a year. With an average age of the vehicle at importation estimated at 13 years and growing. These used cars also have a lower roadworthiness life span when compared new cars , estimated at an average of 8 years lower than a new car.

In the used car market, information concerning the fitness and history of the vehicles being sold is usually inadequate. This means that many buyers may unknowingly buy an un-roadworthy vehicle or one that is statutory non-compliant. This has implications on both value for money and public safety.

It is for this reason, that Automark has embarked on Quality Education Campaign aimed at educating the public on what to look out for when buying a used car. This guide is available free of charge at the following link: AUTOMARK PURCHASE GUIDE alternatively, a hard copy may be collected from any of the Automark outlets at Toyota Nangwenya, Toyota Cairo, Copperbelt Toyota, Toyota Livingstone and Toyota Solwezi. TOYOTA GAZOO Racing second in Le Mans thriller

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s winning streak at the Le Mans 24 Hours came to a valiant end after an epic day-long battle for an historic victory in the centenary edition of the legendary French race.

After five consecutive Le Mans wins, the World Champions took on the challenge of a record 16-car Hypercar field featuring competitors from Cadillac, Ferrari, Peugeot and Porsche. A sell-out 325,000 crowd witnessed an exceptionally close contest featuring drama and excitement until the very end.

Last year’s winners Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa, in the #8 GR010 HYBRID, saw off all competitors bar one. After 24 relentless hours of racing, the #8 crossed the line in second place, 1min 21.793secs behind the winning #51 Ferrari.

Only one GR010 HYBRID reached the chequered flag at the end of 342 laps. The #7 of Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José María López saw their victory hopes dashed through no fault of their own, by an accident after eight hours. Kamui was at the wheel when his car was hit from behind, causing terminal damage.

Both GR010 HYBRIDs had been at the front from the beginning when Sébastien led the early stages after starting third, with Mike fighting for the podium positions from fifth on the grid.

An exciting battle ignited immediately with spectacular wheel-to-wheel racing among the top 10 through the opening hours. Two rain showers added to the drama and positions changed as frequently as the conditions, with the GR010 HYBRIDs staying in contention during the first third of the race.

At that point, the #7 led the charge from second but their race ended at Tertre Rouge. Approaching a slow zone, where a maximum 80km/h speed applies and overtaking is forbidden, Kamui slowed to avoid passing another car and was hit from behind by two lapped cars. The impact caused driveshaft, tyre and bodywork damage meaning the car could not return to the pits.

In a show of team spirit and determination, the #7 crew of mechanics and engineers put that disappointment aside and immediately joined forces with their #8 counterparts to strengthen the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing challenge.

After the #94 Peugeot and #50 Ferrari dropped back, the #8 fought a titanic battle with the #51 Ferrari, initially leading in the early morning until it dropped to second when pitting to fix a damaged front splitter and right rear tyre puncture.

The leading pair kept up a relentless pace as the momentum swung back and forth. After 20 hours of racing, only three seconds separated the two leaders and there was no respite in the closing stages.

When Ryo took over with two hours to go following an impressive quadruple stint from Brendon, he was 16secs behind. He set about closing the gap but moments later the #8 went off at Arnage, hitting the barriers and damaging the front and rear bodywork. The #8 retained second place despite losing three minutes.

After those repairs, Ryo returned to the track but the contest with the leading Ferrari was over, with the priority now on reaching the chequered flag safely in a second place which, despite the disappointment, extends their drivers’ World Championship lead to 25 points.

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s advantage in the manufacturers’ World Championship has been cut to 18 points over Ferrari, with three races remaining. The next race, the 6 Hours of Monza, takes place in four weeks, on 9 July.

Kamui Kobayashi (Team Principal and driver, car #7):

“Unfortunately, the centenary Le Mans was not our race. We had bad luck on car #7 when I was driving. It’s hard to believe what happened. During a slow zone procedure, a car ahead braked and I reacted to avoid a penalty, but I was hit from behind. It damaged the car and there was no solution to get back to the garage. That was tough for us because I think we had done a strong job up to then. Car #8 fought as hard as possible until the end and finished second. As a team we did everything we could, we got the maximum performance from the car and the drivers gave everything. We really fought hard to win this centenary Le Mans and everyone enjoyed working together to try to get the victory. We need to come back stronger; that’s how we deal with disappointments. Thank you to everyone who has supported. We will fight again together soon.”

Mike Conway (Driver, car #7):

“Car #8 drove a great race, they gave 100% and that’s all you can ask for. Thanks to the whole team for doing a stellar job all week. Unfortunately, it was a short race for our car. We were hanging in there in the difficult conditions, we didn’t make any mistakes and stayed in the fight. Maybe we were not the quickest, but we were doing our job. It’s a pity we got taken out in those circumstances but there were so many incidents in those slow zones. That’s just the way it went for us here, sadly. It’s a dent in the World Championship chances but we will try to win some races before the season ends. We move on to the next race.”

José María López (Driver, car #7):

“That was another disappointing Le Mans for our car. I can look back and be happy with my stint because when I got in the car, we were at the bottom of the top 10 and I came back to the pits in third. I needed to manage the risk on slicks in the rain, I was just surviving. It was a tough race; we tried everything. What happened wasn’t Kamui’s fault because he did everything correctly. It is disappointing of course but we all stayed at the track to give our support to the #8 car. They gave it their all and made us proud. Again, Le Mans teaches us that we need to be there until the end because you never know what can happen. I am looking forward to coming back.”

Sébastien Buemi (Driver, car #8):

“It was a tough race. At some point it was not easy just to stay on track due to the changing conditions early in the race. We didn’t have the ultimate pace to win but we gave it our best shot and we pushed them all the way. Ferrari were faster than us, so we had to push very hard to stay with them and that meant taking no margin. We tried everything to win so we have no regrets. Congratulations to Ferrari for their victory. They were very impressive from qualifying onwards. Now we will look towards the World Championship and work hard to come back stronger in the next races.”

Brendon Hartley (Driver, car #8):

“I’m feeling a lot of emotions right now. We gave it our all and we had nothing left. We didn’t have the outright performance, but we were still there, putting pressure on Ferrari all the way through. For a moment it was getting exciting at the end when the conditions came back to us a bit and we started to close the gap. Ryo was in the most difficult situation. He was told to do go full risk and try to close the gap so there’s no blame. Right now, it feels like we came so close but were so far away. Big congratulations to Ferrari. They were quicker, and they didn’t make mistakes, so well done to them.”

Ryo Hirakawa (Driver, car #8):

“First of all thanks to Sébastien and Brendon for their hard work and big effort. Thank you also for the team who did a fantastic job all week, and to all our supporters for their encouragement. It was very hard to challenge Ferrari but we never gave up hope and we tried everything to win Le Mans again. We need to analyse this race and find areas to improve. Personally, I will learn from my mistake and come back stronger. There are three races remaining in the season so we will focus on the World Championship, that’s all we can do right now.”

Historic Le Mans awaits TOYOTA GAZOO Racing

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing will be part of another chapter in Le Mans 24 Hours legend when it takes on a record Hypercar field in front of a sell-out crowd for the centenary edition of the world’s most famous endurance race on 10-11 June.

After five consecutive victories since 2018, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing targets a double hat-trick of wins against a 62-car field, including 16 Hypercars from other legendary marques such as Cadillac, Ferrari, Peugeot and Porsche. Only two other manufacturers have won for six straight years at Le Mans; Ferrari from 1960 to 1965 and Porsche from 1981 to 1987.

This year’s race is more prestigious than ever, with 300,000 fans expected for the 100th anniversary edition of an event which began back in 1923 as a showcase for the latest automotive technology and has pioneered road-relevant innovations ever since.

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing has made a superb start to the 2023 FIA Endurance Championship thanks to three wins from the opening three races, most recently a one-two in the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. With double points on offer, the team can take a major step towards a fifth consecutive world title at Le Mans.

Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José María López, in the #7 GR010 HYBRID, came out on top at Spa in April. That was perfect preparation for Le Mans, where they go in search of a second victory together, following their win in 2021 at the beginning of the Hypercar era.

Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa won Le Mans a year ago in the #8 GR010 HYBRID and they go into the centenary edition as World Championship leaders after fighting back to finish second at Spa, despite starting from the back of the grid.

Sébastien is the team’s most successful driver at La Sarthe, with four victories to his name, while Kamui’s five pole positions have contributed to the team’s record-equalling six consecutive poles since 2017.

This year marks Toyota’s 25th participation at Le Mans since its debut in 1985, and its 12th with Hybrid power, highlighting its dedication to enhancing hybrid technology in endurance racing, creating ever-better cars for its customers through motorsport.

Although the GR010 HYBRID made its Le Mans debut two years ago, the car has evolved continuously since it became the first Hypercar winner and arrives in La Sarthe following further adjustments over the winter.

The high-performance Racing Hybrid powertrain, which consists of 520kW (707PS) 3.5litre engine and 200kW (272PS) electric motor, underwent changes to reduce weight and enhance reliability, exploiting the unique knowledge gained from more than a decade of experience with hybrid powertrains at Le Mans.

The 2023-specification GR010 HYBRID, which is powered by 100% renewable bio fuel, features aerodynamic adjustments and other detail changes to enhance drivability and aerodynamic consistency.

Those updates have already been validated in competition during the first three WEC races of 2023, but the latest evolution of the GR010 HYBRID will turn its first laps of the Circuit de la Sarthe on Sunday, during the traditional test day.

Official sessions begin next week with two practice sessions on Wednesday either side of first qualifying, when the fastest eight cars from each class will progress to Thursday’s 30-minute Hyperpole shoot-out, which takes place at 8pm CEST. Two further practice sessions complete the track action on Thursday.

The team will spend Friday rebuilding and preparing its cars before the 91st running of the Le Mans 24 Hours begins on Saturday 10 June at 4pm CEST. It concludes 24 hours later when another page will be added to the illustrious history of endurance racing’s most prestigious event.

Kamui Kobayashi (Team Principal and driver, car #7):

“Le Mans is the highlight of our season and the race we want to win most of all. The team in Higashi-Fuji and Cologne, plus all our suppliers and partners, work intensely for a whole year with a big focus on this race. Thank you to everyone, including our colleagues at Toyota Motor Corporation and Gazoo Racing Company whose support is so important to us, for their huge effort to start the WEC season with three wins. This puts us in a strong position but the first three races don’t count for anything at Le Mans. We need to start from the beginning and prepare our car perfectly, find the best set-ups and once again show our great team spirit because our competition is getting stronger all the time. Le Mans can create many surprises, so we will be prepared for everything. The 100th anniversary of this great race, with so many fans there to enjoy it, will be a very special occasion and we cannot wait to be part of it.”

Mike Conway (Driver, car #7):

“Le Mans is the big one, the race everyone wants to win. I feel like the #7 car has been on top of our game there for the past few years but too many times something has happened and we’ve missed out. But that’s the nature of Le Mans; it’s a very difficult race to win. This year I think we have all the ingredients in place to challenge for the win again, and I know we are capable of fighting at the front. It’s going to be a huge challenge for the whole team; it’s always a tough, exhausting week, but we know the job ahead of us. This team knows how to win Le Mans and we are determined to bring it home again.”

José María López (Driver, car #7):

“I have been looking forward to this Le Mans for a long time and it is a pleasure to be part of this team taking part in such an historic event. I love the race, and I love the track too. Driving our GR010 HYBRID at Le Mans is an amazing experience; you can really feel that our car was built for this track. It’s exciting to hear there will be 300,000 fans at the race and I can understand why because it will be unique. Not only is it the centenary race, but some of the biggest manufacturers are competing against each other. We are pushing hard to be at the front; the target is always to win.”

Sébastien Buemi (Driver, car #8):

“It is always exciting to compete at Le Mans, with its atmosphere and history, but this year it is even more special. Le Mans is the ultimate test of endurance, and it’s an honour to be a part of this unique edition. This will be my 12th time there with the team. We have been on a great journey together and experienced so many emotions, particularly at Le Mans where it all began together back in 2012. Back then, I couldn’t have dreamed of winning the race four times and being part of this story for so long. We will need all our experience to meet a strong challenge this year, but I am confident we will be ready.”

Brendon Hartley (Driver, car #8):

“It’s going to be a really special occasion and it’s a big honour to be on the grid for the 100th anniversary of Le Mans, especially when you look back at the history of this race. Le Mans is always a huge challenge and that’s truer than ever this year with so many Hypercars. Even though we started the season with three wins, we have seen the new teams are getting to grips with their cars and, like us, I am sure they have put a huge effort into Le Mans. So we expect a big fight, with no margin for error. It’s going to be a great spectacle for the fans, but a lot of hard work for the teams and drivers. I can’t wait.”

Ryo Hirakawa (Driver, car #8):

“Le Mans last year was incredible; to win was a dream come true. It was an intense week, flat-out on the track and off it, and I put so much energy into doing my best, it was not easy. Now I have been in the team, driving alongside Sébastien and Brendon, for another year, everything feels more comfortable. I know what to expect at Le Mans and how to prepare myself so I will be in even better shape this year. We have proven that our car is competitive, and the team has so much experience now in endurance racing. We are quite confident, but we will keep pushing and always improving our car.”
